Personal Vita

Great to virtually meet you.

I am Mel Khampha a Boise, Idaho native. I am currently in the Student Affairs Division working in Campus Recreation at Boise State University. I am excited to put all our learnings into action and develop my leadership experience over time. I hope to bring and create a culture provides the opportunity to reflect and continuously pursue our professional development in a space that encourages feedback and creativity.  My experiences in non-profit work and higher education has supported my development and curiousity of diverse perspectives and human potential to be transferable in the work field. I had the opportunity to be in various job positions outside my personal and professional experience to continue the development of my heterogeneous skills and tools when it comes to planning, creating, and executing programs.

“As we learn more about who we are, we can learn techniques that reveal rather than conceal the person hood from which good teaching comes... We can use technique to manifest more fully the gift of self from which our best teaching comes (Palmer, 2017, p.22).”

My Leadership Philosophy.

My leadership approach with students is through a “serve-first” mentality, which is also defined as servant leadership. Servant-leadership is a value based approach used as criteria for personal progression and growth that can strive to maximize the development of all individuals in an organization and attend to the good of society as a whole. I find that the serve-first approach expresses the willingness to see and interact with student employees as equals, and gain a true sense and understanding of their needs and values. By incorporating leadership provides more context for understanding the evolving nature of personal development and helps us identify the capacities, values, and skills required for personal and organizational progress. By incorporating servant leadership it can contribute to the environment to encourage growth. To navigate this, one must recognize the different points of views and try to gain a sense of where the students are developmentally. The challenge is developing leaders with the skills to model and institute our organization’s values as well as their own. To effectively connect others to enhance relationships and build trust, it is on me to facilitate and lead others to share different and diverse points of view (Kouzes & Posner, 2017). To do so it starts with integrity, innovation, and inclusion. Some key advantages of the three I’s welcome diverse experiences from the world to influence our perspectives and understandings.
